I posted this is the general area before finding this forum on Hondas.
Hopefully, someone out there may be able to help me.
The mower is about 12 yrs old. (Model HRC216KHXA serial MZAN-6203044). It was my fathers...less than 20 hrs on it. Pristine condition which makes me want to get this repair done vs scraping the mower. The 'drive' gave out shortly after my 13 yr old hit a stump.
The clutch and cables are fine. My first thoughts are that I need to replace the joint assembly. It doesn't rotate or move at all when the clutch is engaged, but if I pull the mower backwards (while clutch is engaged) the joint assembly rotates smoothly.
While I've already ordered a new joint assembly I'm starting to suspect the problem might be with the parts inside the motor that turn the joint assembly. The schematics show a gear and internal drive shaft (inside the motor).
How can I rule out for certain it's not the joint assembly? To inspect the gear and drive shaft I have to remove the engine and then remove the lower part (oil pan I think). That looks like a big project just to see if a gear is worn out.
