This one belongs to a family we've been friends with for decades whose "head groundskeeper" passed away about ten years ago. There aren't any men in the family so I've been mowing their yard and keeping up Mr's equipment. He always took good care of everything. This 1992 Murray is a 45208 model, 17.5 hp. Has a spin-on oil filter, clear inline gas filter. Each spring the spark plug and oil and filters get changed, and the oil level is checked before starting each time. Blades were replaced last year, and they are sharpened regularly. And last year the belt broke and was able to find a replacement pretty easily. Have to charge the battery about every other month, and use a jumpstarter and some starting fluid to get it cranked. Once it cranks, it runs steady as long as there is gas in the tank. The tires have all been replaced once each, the current set will probably last a few more years. It doesn't turn very tight but that's no bother because you don't have to shut off the blades to go in reverse; but for safety, I shut the blades off anyway. There are some areas of the yard that have very healthy San Augustine grass, and though the speed has to be reduced, it cuts it smoothly and throws it out the side without clogging. It has headlights but I don't know if they work, never tried them. ;-) Near the ditch, the "bull grass" gets so thick the speed has to be reduced to 2, which is pretty much crawling. It cuts that bull grass and throws it out steadily as long as I don't push it too fast.
Yes, sir, the old Murray is still rolling and cutting. Thanks to "Mr" taking such good care of it in its early life, it has lasted longer than many. 34 years, is that right? Wow!
