toro walk behinds: old vs new?

I have been bitten by a bit of a lawn mower bug lately as I look for a replacement for my lawnboy gold series push mower. In all honesty I don't need to replace it as there is nothing wrong with it, I just have never liked the front chute with ofset wheel design. Anyway, I have always had a liking for toro equipment so I have been looking to craigslist for used ones that need a bit of work for cheap. I already got myself a free 2001 toro super recycler with personal pace drive that just needed a good carb cleaning and maybe a new gasket set. It already trumps the lawnboy for ease of use and mowing around obsticles however getting the drive to disengage to pull it backwards is a bit clunky. I also miss having a throttle control lever to play with. So I'm still looking for my next mower to try out.

Anyway on to my question: I would like something with selectable speeds so I can throw it in neutral if need be. I have been looking at some late 80s toro deluxe pow-r drive mowers for cheap, these intregue me I have also been looking for a cheap early to mid 90s super recycler with a bbc to come up. My question is: does anyone have any experiance with either of these? Cut quality? Ease of repair? Is the bbc easy to fix in the later. Any input or opinouns are welcome.
