This 48" mowing deck is new to me and worked fine when I tested it last fall. When the blades are engaged it sometimes mows fine for a few yards but then it sometimes makes a loud noise and the middle blade stops cutting. The noise is loud enough to make me stop and try find the problem.
I have checked the three powered spindles with blades and they do not have any play in them. They appears to have good bearings and the zerts have been greased. I also replaced a bushing on jack sheave arm to put it back in vertical alignment and replaced the fixed idler sheave.
The motor seems strong and had the head gasket replaced last year before I purchased it. The lift assist lever is not locking down properly so I am in the process of repairing it.
Any suggestions on what may be the cause of this very loud grinding noise when I engage the blades? I have a 400 page JD Technical Manual with loads of information but no troubleshooting information on this issue. I expect that there are some adjustments that I need to make but the manual is so thick I have not digested all the complexities of the adjustments.
