2012 Cub Cadet LTX 1045
Family members Cub Cadet came to me about 4 years old with only 29 hrs on it... First your saying Wow! That thing doesn't get a lot of use! Well.... we'll see what your thinking after this story.
No maintenance has been done since time of purchase.. So I decided to go through the machine with a fine tooth comb and see what I could find.
1. Blades look good. Could use a sharpening, but other than that they're ok. No big deal
2. Belt has enough slack in it I can remove it without taking a pulley slack up or moving the deck forward. That would explain the vibration in the deck while mowing. While this is bad... it still gets the job done.
No bid deal
3. Air filter looks good, of course with the hours this is a good reflection.
No big deal
4. Pulled the plug and that looks like good... Another refection of the hours.
No big deal
5. Fuel filter needs replacing but not a major concern...
No big deal
6. Oil looks decent.... Let's run it a bit and drain it. Ok, that's strange.... The oil coming out is running like water and it has a little bit of a fuel smell to it. Maybe that's just old used oil smell. Now that a BIG DEAL! I would venture to say this is the original factory oil never been changed at the recommended interval for break-in. 28 hrs on the meter and Oh! did I mention it's a Kohler Courage Single Cylinder? Well now that I've got your attention! All above matters will carry on, but this. I'm kinda hung on the condition of this engine.
I went ahead and replaced everything they bought in the Kohler kit. Spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, oil and oil filter.
Does this mean problems in the future? Maybe I'm overthinking it! You be the judge!
