So, first time poster. I have used this site numerous times to help me out but I am a little stumped. A month ago I bought an 07 X540. Last night I was mowing with the lights on when they suddenly shut off. The mower was running fine but it was dark so I emptied the bag and was going to quit. When I try and start it now, the oil pressure light indicator only turns on when the key is in the lights on position of the ignition switch (before starting, the light doesn't stay on when running). The machine won't run if the key is in the run position, only if it is in the light position. I should add this is the ignition switch with the light switch built into, so when you turn the key, the first position is lights on, second position is run, and third position is crank. The engine will not stay running in the 2nd position and the lights wont come on in the first position. It is almost as if the lights position is the run position on the switch and the run position is nothing. The machine will not stay running in the on/run position of the switch, only in the lights position, (but I have no lights) If I press the key in and move the tumbler, I can get the lights to turn on.
I have already ordered a new ignition switch and will clean the battery terminals and check the ground wires, but is there anything else that could be causing this? It was very strange.
I want to add that the lights were very Dim last night and that after this happened it didn't want to turn over, acting like a bad ground.
Could a bad ground be causing that switch to be acting funky? Its almost like it's showing symptoms of 2 different problems, bad ground and faulty ignition switch.
