I have a Sears Craftsman Riding Mower, model 917.272067, with a Kohler 16HP Kohler Engine Model 460S. I am having trouble with the charging system. According to the Ammeter, when the engine is at low rpms the needle goes below 0. At high rpm, around 3400, the ammeter shows that tit is charging at about 5. It is not charging the battery properly. After a couple of times mowing with it, I have to jump it to get it started. I have changed all three safety switches, the stator, which has an in-line diode, and two relays all to no avail. It does not have a regulator/rectifier on this model. Does any one have any ideas as to what to check next? I'm at a lost. According to the schematic on this mower, the wire with the diode coming from the stator goes to the switch. Would the switch possibly cause this issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
