How can you tell if that lawn tractor you’re eying comes with a General Transmissions continuously variable transmission (CVT)?
Just as lawn tractors come in many different varieties, so do transmissions. And it’s not always easy to know who makes the transmission, especially since many brand manufacturers call a CVT-equipped mower an “automatic” and leave it at that. Fear not. Just look at the transmission. If the housing is constructed of a black composite, non-metallic material, then it’s almost certainly from the General Transmissions line of Element V automatic (CVT) transmissions, either a GT RS-800 or GT RT-400. Most other transmissions are made of aluminum, often unpainted so they simply have a gray or silvery metallic color.
