I just obtained some Honda HR214 parts (about 90% of the entire mower - all disassembled and stored in a box, including the assembled engine). The engine supposedly had an oil leak at the lower engine cover (which I think is called the oil pan). The oil leaked onto the clutch and the mower hasn't been operated for the last 15 years, while someone contemplated fixing it. I took a quick look at the engine today, and the oil pan looks to me as if it has some hairline cracks. If you closely look at the picture (I hope the pic is included in this post), the cracks can be seen just above where the engine crank shaft comes out of the pan. I don't have enough experience to make a judgement as to whether or not the cracks are surface cracks, or do they go through the entire thickness of the pan and have probably caused the oil leak. The leaked oil has been cleaned off of the pan, so there's no evidence of exactly where the leak was at. I am also wondering if the lower oil seal has a history of leaking on this engine (GXV 120)?
I would appreciate opinions on how serious you think these cracks are, and if you think this caused the oil leak. Obviously, removing the pan and inspecting it from the inside would provide a more certain assessment, but I'm not sure when I'll get to that. I would think that the solution would be to replace the oil pan, but I would also appreciate opinions on whether or not the cracks can be repaired.
Thanks
