lawnmower repair in knoxville tn

Hello everyone, I'm glad to be here. I've only been repairing lawn equipment for about three years. Before that I began in automotive (ASE master cert), went to truck (ASE master heavy/medium truck tech), over to construction equipment specializing in AWP's, then on to farm tractors and finally lawn equipment. Yep; I'm old...62. But not stale.:sidelaugh
I very seldom have an issue that I cannot eventually solve except one that I have been dealing with for over two years now. I have had the same problem with an "L" head briggs and now an OHV briggs. The OHV is a 31P977-0575-E2. The problem has been the flywheel key shearing on both when trying to start them. All obvious causes have been checked and I have solicited advice from all the old timers around here. I finally have installed steel keys in both engines which has solved the problem for awhile. I would prefer to find the cause though and hope that someone on this forum has seen this problem before and found a cure/fix? Many thanks.
