Hello Forum Friends
I recently acquired a neglected Poulan Pro 300EX riding mower. It was free. This is my first mower and I have limited experience working on small engines, so I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions.
The mower sat for I don't know how long before I picked it up. The keyswitch wouldn't respond, so I jumped the starter solenoid. When the engine began spinning, the magneto burned up in a dramatic cloud of white smoke. Not quite sure how that happened... So I ordered a new magneto and rewired the mower, bypassing all the safety switches. While I was waiting for the part, I cleaned the carb and the fuel tank and replaced the fuel filter (it was full of junk). After I installed the magneto, she fired up strong! Too strong... The governor and idle screw needed adjustment, but she's running great now.
The next problem is that the mower deck does not engage... Another discussion for another time.
Anyway, thanks for having me. Here's my mower-
