I have a John Deere 314 I bought used a couple years ago when my wife and I bought our house. Ive had a few issues here and there with it but am going to pick it up from the shop after having some fuel issues this spring (there was a bunch of gunk in the fuel tank). The other issue I had is that I was burning through coils, granted I have been using standard auto coils, but he replaced it with a Kohler coil at more than twice the price of the others. He says that now it runs like a top without the deck on but with the deck on it is back feeding power into the coil and that is what is frying the coils. He has come to the conclusion that it is the electronic clutch as the wire to the switch was very hot after he mowed with it. He believes the clutch is going bad which is what is causing the issues. Does this make sense to anyone and does anyone have experience with this? From what I'm seeing the clutch is like a $300 part and I only paid $650 for the mower have over $100 in 3 new tires not to mention a new battery and the $150 in service he just completed. Do I just cut my loses and buy something else or do I go ahead and fix it. I have a John Deere 214 and an old Wheel Horse 10 that are sitting in the shed but neither have run in 10+ years and the John Deere spent most of that time outside. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
