I've got an older Craftsman garden tractor Model 917.255980 and I've been having trouble with the transmission. Only the high 5th and 6th gears work. It has a leak for years and I see now that it only takes straight 30W oil vs hydrolic oil. The first question is how do I fill the gear box? I don't see any filll plugs. My hope is that by filling the crank case, it might free up any stuck parts.
Secondly, the part number for the whole transaxle unit is 137973. I'm lookingat the whole unit for cross reference purposes. I have a chance to buy an older still 917.255950 model with a working gear box. It's part number, however, is 122419X. The parts diagram for both are IDENTICAL. The parts are listed with the Identical ITEM #s in the Diagram, but on the actual Parts List, the Part No. for the same Item, are different. Can anyone tell me if the transmissions are one and the same and hence, interchangeable.
I really like this old GT because it can pull uphill my small trailer loaded with firewood. I'd hate to get rid of it. Also, I don't want to buy the other GT if the parts are't interchangeable.
